OnePlus Plans To Take Back #NeverSettle From Verizon

#NeverSettle

Back in 2014, this seemingly innocent and kind of motivating hashtag took the tech industry by storm. Afterall, how often do you see a “new” company give the top guns of Android a run for their money?

The #NeverSettle mantra was what OnePlus was founded on, as they claim. Even though the device was marred with issues and criticism ranging from its invite-system method of sale, to its rather infamous customer service and quite recently, its attempts to acknowledge and fix the touchscreen issues on their first device, you have to give the company a lot of points for their efforts. Irrespective of all its flaws, the OnePlus One was one of the most talked about devices of 2014 in both good and bad ways.

Recently, Verizon Wireless decided to adopt the #NeverSettle hashtag for themselves. All irony aside, this obviously ruffled some feathers over at OnePlus, for this combination of words had come to be the branding slogan of the OnePlus One. Even for the users, it is easy to see how this could be confusing as both the companies are in different market operations and use the hashtag in different manners.

Since patents for hashtags do not exist (yet), OnePlus is taking matters in its own hands, by attempting to draw power from its fan base by broadcasting a Twitter message from their profiles on June 8, and hopefully persuading one of USA’s largest carriers to think up something original on their own. To organize this, OnePlus has created a Thunderclap project to schedule messages. At the time of writing, the thunderclap project has more than 7,000 supporters (which is 1423% of the project’s goal of 500 supporters), having a social reach of 2.5 Million people with more than 11 days left for the “event”.

The timing of this call for arms is quite close to another big unveiling by OnePlus on June 1, so this could easily be confused as a marketing attempt..While we do not believe a tweetout would be the most diplomatic way to approach this subject, we admire OnePlus standing up to the big guy and fighting for what’s theirs.

If you wish to support this project, visit the Thunderclap project.

What do you think of this move by OnePlus? Was it right for Verizon Wireless to hijack someone else’s brand slogan? Could OnePlus approach this matter in a more thoughtful manner? Let us know in the comments below!
